We’re delighted to have been asked to be the official provider running tours alongside the ESMO 2017 conference in Madrid this year, and have put together a schedule of exciting, insider style tours to run in parallel with the conference. These tours are run completely independently of the conference and are open to anyone who is in Madrid during these dates, whether you are visiting on holiday, for work or you are living here!

1. Insider’s Madrid Walking Tour

Join us on our Insider’s guided walking tour through the medieval Austrias and Letras neighborhoods of Madrid. We visit the magnificent avenues and cobbled streets, learn how artisans craft Spanish capes, hand-painted silk and guitars. Witness the city’s evolution in architecture from the 1500s until today. Step up to the notorious Congress building, into the impressive Plaza Mayor, and descend the Cuchilleros street, look inside the oldest restaurant in the world, and hear about local Spanish legends.

2. Insider’s Madrid Tapas Tour

Our gourmet Insider’s tapas tour takes you on a delightful cultural and culinary journey through Madrid and Spain, sampling regional specialities and excellent wines to give you an entertaining evening as well as a survivor’s guide to Madrid tapas-bar hopping Spanish-style. Join us in this uniquely Spanish social tradition as we bring you to four of our favourite tapas bars.

3. Flamenco Night: a behind-the-scenes meeting followed by dinner and show

Running for three nights only, we gather in the intimate setting of a flamenco club for an evening of three parts. A professional dancer and guitarist talk to us about the roots, the rythmns , the history and the intuition of flamenco. What makes flamenco so spontaneous? What is the unspoken language between the performers? Does the spirit of flamenco, the duende, really exist? These and many other questions are answered before the doors open to the public and we go on to enjoy a delicious pre-show dinner before a truly moving and passionate performance with two guitarists, two singers and four dancers. Olé!

4. Palace to Rooftop: through the eyes of an Architect

What better way to admire a city with so much contrast in its style than through the eyes of an architect and an urban planner! On this specially commissioned tour, we start where Madrid began – the site of the original Muslim stronghold where the Royal Palace stands today. From here, we take a gentle walk through the centuries to admire the architecture around us; the Austrias area of the 15th century with the Plaza Mayor and Plaza de la Villa, then cross into the 18th century at the Puerta de Sol with a stroll down the 20th century Gran Via to our final destination: the rooftop of the Círculo de Bellas Artes where Picasso took drawing classes. There we enjoy the splendid panoramic view and with a rooftop aperitif to finish..

5. The Prado Museum Tour

Why is Las Meninas regarded as one of the world’s greatest masterpieces? What is the Garden of Earthy Delights’ really about? And what was Goya trying to tell us with when he painted the black paintings las pinturas negras? Our expert art historian answers these and many other questions on this especially curated tour of the Prado museum.

6. The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum Tour

Housed in the Villahermosa Palace, the Thyssen collection is one of the most important private art collections in the world. Known for its huge range of artistic styles with a collection that spans eight centuries, we visit collection highlights from Holbein to Hopper and everything in between, be it Manet, Van Gogh or Singer Sargent. Our expert art historian takes us on a fascinating journey on this specially curated visit bringing the spirit of these works to life.

  • Meeting Place:  The Thyssen-Bornemisza, inside the museum in the lobby area.

  • Includes:  The guided visit with an art historian, the Thyssen-Bornemisza entrance.

7. Reina Sofia Museum Tour

We visit the Modern Art museum, the Museo Reina Sofia with our art historian for insight into the modernist scene in Spain. We pay homage to Picasso’s masterpiece Guernica celebrating the 80th anniversary this year since it was painted. We visit other collection highlights including works by Zuloaga, Dalí and Miró.

8. Full Day Trip: TOLEDO, a World Heritage Site excursion

Day excursions from Madrid to Toledo

Toledo – the former capital of Spain with its layers of civilization, founded by the Romans where Jewish, Christian and Muslim faiths have lived side by side. We walk down its cobbled streets to visit the gothic cathedral, the Primate cathedral in Spain, which took 263 years to build. From here we visit the Santo Tome church to see the El Greco masterpiece of the Burial of the Count of Orgaz and then walk into the former Jewish quarter with its Tránsito synagogue and Sephardic museum. We visit the elaborate cloisters of San Juan de los Reyes, built by the Catholic Monarchs as their final resting place and take a panoramic tour around the city walls. Free time for lunch half-way through our tour.

9. Full day trip: SEGOVIA a World Heritage Site excursion

Home to one of the great examples of Roman engineering in the form of its aqueduct, Segovia was made a world heritage site by UNESCO in 1985 and combines its historic sites with the day to day hustle and bustle as a charming living and working city. We see both medieval and renaissance architecture on our guided walk through the streets visiting the lavish House of Picos and the former synagogue, the Corpus Christi church. We visit the impressive Alcazár castle, former residence to the Catholic Monarchs, also said to have inspired the Walt Disney castle. Free time for lunch halfway through our tour.
